Better Futures Campaign

The NCYPE and the Better Futures Campaign are grateful to
The Peter Harrison Foundation and The Linbury Trust
for their generous support.

Around 60,000 young people under 18 have epilepsy in the UK - half are estimated to be under-achieving in school.

Three people die every day from epilepsy-related causes.

It is estimated that at least 400 lives a year would be saved if the NICE clinical guidelines of 2004 were properly implemented.

About a quarter of all those known to UK learning disability services have epilepsy.

On average there is one child with epilepsy in every primary school and five in every secondary school.

Two out of five people experiencing seizures could be seizure free, but are not.

Epilepsy is as common as insulin dependent diabetes.

The National Centre for Young People with Epilepsy is running a national campaign to improve the lives of children and young people in the UK with epilepsy.

The Better Futures Campaign will build on the NCYPE’s wealth of knowledge and expertise to promote better services and understanding for young people with epilepsy.

NCYPE’s Childhood Epilepsy Information Service is already providing professional, high quality information to parents, families, carers and professionals across the UK.

Now the Better Futures Campaign will press for improvements to education, health and other services for the estimated 60,000 children and young people living with epilepsy right across the UK.

By working with all our partners, providing training, guidance and support; working directly with a range of organisations and service providers at all levels and lobbying those in charge to ensure the right policies are in place we know we can really make a difference.

A more detailed overview of the campaign is set out below along with information about our early campaign activity.
