Physiotherapy
Efficiency of movement is fundamental to all learning experiences. By improving the quality of movement patterns and physical performance, the physiotherapy team contributes towards increasing student confidence and self-esteem, helping to extend and broaden physical experience and to develop increased functional independence. Physiotherapists aim to improve sensory awareness, balance and co-ordination, to strengthen, mobilise and increase the range and sphere of movement, where appropriate.
Physiotherapy needs are addressed on each student's admission to the NCYPE. Assessments are carried out, exercise sessions are put in place, and exercise programmes are supplied. Students are assessed for specific equipment in liaison with the occupational therapists.
Many of our students require orthotic intervention, in the form of special shoes, adaptations to footwear, splints or insoles. The monitoring and supply of orthotics is facilitated by the physiotherapy team.
Most students with physical needs will have regular, timetabled, exercise sessions, often on a weekly basis. These may be individually or within small groups, depending on their needs and abilities. Those with purely orthotic or monitoring needs may be reviewed termly.
Students will be referred to the physiotherapists in the case of an injury. Intensive daily therapy can also be made available following chest infections or other acute conditions, as required, or following orthopaedic or neuro-surgery. Where appropriate, liaison is maintained with students' consultants at outside hospitals.
