Speech and Language Therapy
Our overall goal for the students is effective two-way communication.
Therapy often involves social conversation skills, incorporating work on body language. Students may work on listening, understanding, conveying information or speaking clearly and fluently. Often we teach strategies to increase independence in communicating. Our work with pre-verbal students focuses on developing intentional and functional communication through basic skills groups, staff training and liaison.
The Speech & Language Therapy (SLT) team help with all types of difficulty in communicating, as well as problems with oral skills for eating and drinking and saliva control. Students attend individual or group therapy sessions.
Students do best with additional support from key staff or from their families at home. Students may be sent 'homework' packs and are encouraged to take responsibility for their own progress as far as possible. Difficulties with eating and drinking are assessed in conjunction with the other Clinical Services disciplines, especially Occupational Therapy. Joint recommendations are provided for consistency of care.
